Chapter 10

Mark woke up shortly after nine and was relieved to discover that his body hadn’t suffered noticeably from sleeping inside the concrete pipe. It had been a good night, free of nightmares and any disturbing images, which surprised him given what he’d gone through. He stretched his arms and yawned, before he checked that his gun was still in his lap, and discovered that it had fallen down on the floor sometime during the night.

It was overcast outside, and once again he found himself worrying about the prospect of snow. It would be a complete game changer, and definitely not in his favour. He lay there for a while listening for sounds, but there was only silence. Everything appeared to be normal.

He was certain that no cars had driven past during the night, and that meant no one had gone to or left the cabin, at least not via the road.

His stomach started rumbling and let him know that he'd hardly had anything to eat since the attack. He reached inside the backpack and got out another bag of beef jerky. Apart from the one decent meal yesterday, he'd only nibbled on dried meat. It was his only option since lighting a fire was out of the question, and the thought of eating cold meat out a tin can didn't particularly appeal to him. If he could only make it to the western side of the cabin, then perhaps he could risk lighting a small fire.

As he lay there looking at the mountain on the other side of the lake, he decided that he would not wait until nightfall to make his getaway. His attackers must have assumed that he was heading for town, and decided to follow him. He would wait for another hour, then he would climb out and head west, before his attackers realised their mistake and came back to search the area.
